How to Burn Your Candles the Right Way

A beautifully made candle deserves a beautiful burn. Proper candle care helps your candle burn evenly, last longer, and fill your space with fragrance safely. Follow these simple tips to get the best experience from your Maison Lumiére candle.

1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch. A properly trimmed wick encourages a clean, steady flame and helps prevent excess smoke, soot, and mushrooming.

Always allow the candle to cool completely before trimming the wick.

2. Make the First Burn Count

The first burn sets the foundation for the life of your candle. Allow the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the container before extinguishing the flame. Depending on the candle’s size, this may take two to four hours.

Extinguishing the candle too soon can create tunneling, leaving unused wax around the sides of the vessel.

3. Limit Each Burn to Four Hours

For the safest and most even performance, do not burn your candle for longer than four hours at a time. Extended burning can cause the container to become too hot and may make the flame larger or less stable.

Let the candle cool completely before relighting it.

4. Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Remove wick trimmings, matches, and other debris from the wax. These materials can affect the candle’s performance and may create an additional fire risk.

5. Choose a Safe Place to Burn

Always place your candle on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface. Keep it away from curtains, bedding, paper, decorations, drafts, fans, air vents, children, and pets.

Never leave a burning candle unattended, and never move it while the wax is melted or the container is hot.

6. Know When to Stop Burning

Discontinue use when approximately ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. Burning the candle beyond this point may cause the container to overheat.

7. Extinguish It Carefully

Use a candle snuffer whenever possible. If you blow out the candle, do so gently to avoid splashing hot wax. Never use water to extinguish a candle, as it can cause the wax to splatter or the container to crack.
